Core ICT provides learners with the essential digital skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to navigate an increasingly technical world. The curriculum is built around the AQA Unit Award Scheme (Pre‑Entry, Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2) and is designed to progressively develop learners’ digital literacy, problem‑solving and practical ICT competencies. Through a blend of hands‑on activities, real‑world tasks, and guided instruction, learners gain experience using a wide range of technologies that support everyday life, further education, and future employment.
Learners study key areas including online safety and cybersecurity, where they learn to use the internet safely, recognise risks, manage digital footprints, and understand basic cyber threats. They also develop proficiency with productivity software, using applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation tools to create and edit digital content. As they progress, learners explore data handling, learning to collect, organise and interpret information responsibly and securely.
The course also introduces learners to ICT systems and hardware, helping them understand how computers, devices and networks function, and how to troubleshoot simple technical issues. Creative elements are woven throughout the curriculum, with units in digital media, such as filmmaking, graphics and video production, giving learners opportunities to apply their skills in engaging and meaningful projects. At higher levels, learners develop coding and computational thinking, building foundational programming skills and the ability to use ICT to solve real‑world problems.
Overall, Core ICT supports learners in becoming confident, capable and responsible digital citizens. The structured progression of AQA units enables learners to achieve accredited outcomes that strengthen their readiness for further study, vocational pathways, and modern workplace environments.
