Communication at Oakfield
The communication team at Oakfield High School and College currently consists of a Communication lead and three communication team members.
Communication aids are used consistently throughout school covering all aspects of the school day. The communication team work closely with other members of staff to ensure that effective communication tools are used throughout the curriculum.
Effective strategies are put in place at unstructured times of the day such as lunchtime, clubs and break time. Visual aids are used regularly to encourage and build on learner independence.
Regular tools are used throughout school and college to support children with communication needs, such as;
Signalong- A key word sign-supported communication system based on British sign language and is used in spoken word order.
Sign of the week- Weekly sign involving members of staff and learners. Signs are shown in assemblies and online to encourage other learners to sign.
Board maker- Used to create visual timetables, menus and symbols for subjects.
Learning journals- Resource used to allow learners to inform parents/carers of what a learner has done each day.
Visual timetables and menus- Adapted timetables and lunch menus which include symbols and signs in order to support learners.
